What Happened

Tamil Nadu's state-run liquor retailer, TASMAC, has directed its 4,048 outlets to accept only digital payments for single purchases exceeding ₹1,000 from November 1, 2026. The threshold will fall to ₹500 on January 1, 2027. Customers can use UPI, debit or credit cards. The October 26 directive aims to reduce cash handling, accounting discrepancies and overcharging.

Key Takeaways

Cash payments will remain permitted for purchases within the specified limits. TASMAC has also prohibited staff from accepting payments through personal accounts and requires official billing to improve transaction accountability.
