The Day Narada Lived an Entire Lifetime in a Few Minutes

Published: 2 September 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

Sage Narada was known for his wisdom and devotion to Lord Vishnu. Yet one day, he became curious about Maya, the divine illusion that binds people to the world. He asked Vishnu, "Lord, everyone speaks of Maya. What is it, and why is it so difficult to overcome?" Vishnu smiled and asked Narada to fetch some water from a nearby village. When Narada arrived, he met a beautiful young woman. They began talking, and one conversation led to another. Soon, Narada forgot about the water. He married the woman, started a family, and spent years as a householder. He experienced everything: love, wealth, joy, success, worries, and responsibilities. Many years later, a devastating flood struck the village. Narada desperately tried to save his wife and children, but one by one they were swept away by the raging waters. Heartbroken, he collapsed on the riverbank. Suddenly he heard a familiar voice: "Narada, where is the water I asked you to bring?" He looked up and saw Lord Vishnu standing before him. To Narada's shock, only a few moments had passed since he had left to fetch water. Narada realised that an entire lifetime of experiences had unfolded within the power of Maya. What felt like decades of joy and sorrow had occurred in a matter of moments. Lord Vishnu explained that this is how worldly attachment works.
