What Happened

When people talk about the children of Shiva and Parvati, the names that usually come up are Ganesha and Kartikeya. But very few know that the divine couple also had a daughter named Ashokasundari. Her story, hidden in the Padma Purana, is filled with magic, prophecy, a demon's obsession, and a battle against destiny. One day, Parvati was walking through the celestial garden of Nandanavana with Shiva. There she saw the legendary Kalpavriksha, the wish-fulfilling tree. Curious about its powers, she wished for a daughter. The tree immediately granted her wish. A beautiful young girl appeared before her. Parvati named her Ashokasundari, meaning "the beautiful one who removes sorrow." The child was born to bring joy and companionship to her mother. As Ashokasundari grew up on Mount Kailash, Parvati revealed an important prophecy. She told her daughter that one day she would marry Nahusha, a great king destined for greatness. At that moment, Ashokasundari had never met Nahusha. Yet her future had already been decided by destiny. One day, while wandering in the celestial forest, Ashokasundari caught the attention of a powerful demon named Hunda. The demon was enchanted by her beauty. Without hesitation, he asked her to become his wife. Ashokasundari refused. She calmly told him that she was destined to marry Nahusha and no one else. Hunda was not willing to accept rejection. Using deception, he disguised himself and tricked Ashokasundari into accompanying him to his palace. But the daughter of Shiva and Parvati was not weak. The moment she realized she had been deceived, she confronted the demon. Ashokasundari looked directly at Hunda and pronounced a terrifying curse: "You will be killed by Nahusha." The curse shook the demon. Suddenly, his desire turned into fear. To save himself, Hunda decided to eliminate Nahusha before he could grow up. He abducted the young prince and tried to prevent the prophecy from coming true. But fate had other plans. Nahusha survived and was raised safely under the protection of sages. Years later, he grew into a mighty warrior. When Nahusha finally confronted Hunda, a fierce battle took place. Despite all the demon's efforts to change the future, he could not escape destiny. Nahusha defeated and killed Hunda exactly as Ashokasundari had foretold. The curse had become reality. After Hunda's death, Nahusha and Ashokasundari were finally united. The two married, fulfilling the prophecy declared years earlier on Mount Kailash. Their son would later be Yayati, one of the most important kings in Hindu mythology and an ancestor of several famous dynasties mentioned in the Mahabharata.

Key Takeaways

Ashokasundari's story teaches that destiny cannot be changed by fear, deception, or force.
