News of the jewel spread far and wide, and many neighboring kings became jealous. They gathered their armies and marched toward Ujjain to seize the gem. As war clouds gathered, King Chandrasena did not panic. Instead of preparing for battle, he went to a Shiva temple and immersed himself in worship. At that time, a poor widow lived in the city with her young son named Shrikar. One day, the boy happened to see King Chandrasena offering heartfelt prayers to Lord Shiva. The king's devotion deeply moved him. Shrikar asked his mother, “Can I also worship Shiva like the king?” His mother smiled sadly. “We are poor, my child. We have no temple, no offerings, no jewels.” But the boy's faith was stronger than circumstances. He found a small stone on the roadside and imagined it to be a Shiva Lingam. With flowers gathered from the fields and water from a nearby stream, he began worshipping the stone with complete devotion. Hours passed. The boy forgot hunger, thirst, and the world around him. His worried mother searched for him and finally found him sitting before the stone in meditation. Thinking he was playing foolish games, she picked up the stone and threw it away. The boy was devastated. He cried bitterly. “O Lord Shiva! My only temple is gone!” Overwhelmed by grief and devotion, he fainted. When Shrikar opened his eyes, a miracle awaited him. Before him stood a magnificent golden temple shining like the sun. Inside was a radiant Shiva Lingam surrounded by divine light. The gods themselves seemed present. Lord Shiva had appeared and accepted the boy's simple devotion. At that very moment, the invading kings who had come to attack Ujjain witnessed the miracle. Their arrogance vanished. They laid down their weapons and bowed before Shiva. Peace was restored without a battle. Lord Shiva blessed King Chandrasena, Shrikar, and the people of Ujjain. He promised to remain there eternally as Mahakaleshwar, protector of devotees and destroyer of fear. The place became one of the most revered Jyotirlingas in India.
