The Woman Who Turned Gods into Babies
What Happened
Anasuya, the wife of Sage Atri, was renowned across the three worlds for her purity, wisdom, and unwavering devotion. Her reputation became so great that even the celestial beings spoke about her virtues. According to a famous Puranic legend, the three supreme deities, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva (the Trimurti), decided to test Anasuya's virtue. Disguised as wandering sages, they arrived at her hermitage while Sage Atri was away and asked for food. However, they set an impossible condition: she could serve them only if she appeared before them without any clothing. Anasuya realized that this was a divine test. Instead of becoming angry or frightened, she used her spiritual wisdom. She sprinkled holy water and invoked her power of purity. Instantly, the three visitors were transformed into helpless infants. As babies, they no longer posed any challenge to her dignity, and she lovingly fed and cared for them like a mother. When the gods did not return to their heavenly abodes, their consorts became concerned. They approached Anasuya and requested her forgiveness. Pleased by their humility, Anasuya restored the infants to their original divine forms. Deeply impressed by her virtue and wisdom, the Trimurti blessed her. According to tradition, their blessings later led to the birth of Dattatreya, revered as a divine incarnation associated with the Trimurti.
