Too Many SIMs? New DoT Checks From Aug 24 Could Block Your Next Connection

Published: 22 August 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

From August 24, telecom operators in India will begin strictly enforcing the existing limit on mobile connections. Individuals who already have the maximum allowed number of SIM cards in their name will not be able to get a new connection. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will use its Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) and subscriber photographs to identify users who have reached the limit across all telecom operators.

Key Takeaways

The 9-SIM rule is not new, but enforcement is becoming much stricter from August 24. Telecom companies will cross-check subscriber records across operators and may suspend any newly activated connection that exceeds the permitted limit.
