Ukraine seeks India’s help to revive crucial Black Sea food exports

Published: 19 October 2026 · 1 min read

What Happened

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is in talks with India, Turkey and Egypt over reopening civilian navigation in the Black Sea, particularly for agricultural exports. According to Zelenskyy, the three countries have proposed safe navigation for vessels flying their flags and entering both Ukrainian and Russian ports to transport food, under arrangements not to strike those vessels. He said Russia currently opposes the proposal.

Key Takeaways

The route is critical because Ukraine’s Black Sea ports can ship up to 40 million tons of grain in a marketing season, while Ukraine’s Agriculture Ministry says the country is currently able to export only 38% of its normal volumes. Kyiv has also asked the European Union to restore its “solidarity lanes” for moving grain through European railways and ports.
