Why Ravana Wasn't Born Ravana: The Untold Story of Shiva's Curse and Blessing
What Happened
When the great sage Vishrava and his wife Kaikesi welcomed their first son, they named him Dashagriva, meaning "the one with ten necks (or heads)." From a young age, Dashagriva displayed extraordinary intelligence, immense physical strength, and an insatiable ambition. No one could have imagined that this gifted child would one day become the most feared king of Lanka. One day, while travelling near Mount Kailasa, the abode of Shiva, his chariot suddenly stopped. Shiva's attendant Nandi informed him that the mountain was sacred and that no one could proceed further. Instead of respecting the warning, Dashagriva mocked Nandi. In response, Nandi cursed him that beings resembling monkeys would one day destroy him and his race. In a fit of pride, he decided to uproot the entire mountain and demonstrate his unmatched strength. Using all twenty of his arms, he lifted Kailasa from its base. For a moment, the mountain trembled. Then Shiva calmly pressed it down with the tip of his toe. Instantly, Dashagriva found himself trapped beneath the colossal mountain. Crushed under the mountain and in terrible pain, Dashagriva let out a roar so loud that it echoed through the worlds. He remained trapped for many years and eventually began singing hymns in praise of Shiva for a very long time. Pleased by his devotion, Shiva forgave him, released him, and granted him the celestial sword Chandrahasa. Shiva also gave him a new name: Ravana - "the one who roared (or made the worlds cry out).
