What Happened

The World Bank released its report “India and Artificial Intelligence: Seizing the Development Opportunity”, placing India among the top 10 emerging markets in AI readiness. The report noted that private AI investment rose sharply from $1.2 billion in 2024 to $4.1 billion in 2025, while employment in Global Capability Centres (GCCs) grew to 2.36 million professionals. India’s strengths include its large technical workforce, globally integrated IT sector, and digital public infrastructure. However, the World Bank cautioned that the long-term economic and labour market impacts of AI remain uncertain. It recommended policy measures to strengthen infrastructure, improve the business environment, broaden access, and enhance workforce skills to ensure AI benefits are widely shared.

Key Takeaways

India’s rapid rise in AI readiness signals strong potential for productivity and public service improvements. Yet, without stronger regulation, infrastructure, and inclusive access, the benefits of AI may remain unevenly distributed across sectors and populations.
